THE CAUCASUS & ARMENIA

This tour to Georgia and Armenia encompassed the full range of altitudes and habitats of the Caucasian region, from lowland marshes in the Armash region to snowfields in the high Caucasus. This year we achieved an impressive record total of 233 species in two weeks including no fewer than 19 species of raptors, 23 waders, 22 thrushes and chats, and 23 warblers, as well as all the Caucasian specialities: Caucasian Snowcock, Caucasian Grouse, Green Warbler, Caucasian Chiffchaff and Caucasian Great Rosefinch. We also found several sought-after species whose ranges only just creep into the Western Palearctic, such as White-tailed Lapwing, Güldenstädt’s Redstart, Rufous-tailed Wheatear, Pale Rockfinch and Grey-necked Bunting. Other specialities included Pygmy Cormorant, Marbled and White-headed Ducks, Levant Sparrowhawk, Caspian Snowcock, Pallas’s and Armenian Gulls, Middle Spotted Woodpecker, Radde’s Accentor, White-throated Robin, Finsch’s Wheatear, Moustached, Paddyfield, Upcher’s, Ménétries’s and Eastern Orphean Warblers, Semi-collared Flycatcher, Sombre Tit, Western and Eastern Rock Nuthatches, Red-fronted Serin and Crimson-winged Finch.
