We once again returned to The Gambia and Senegal in what turned out to be a highly successful tour. An impressive, total of 359 species were recorded of which all but two were seen. Notable highlights included three White-backed Night Herons, dainty African Swallow-tailed Kites, two Beaudouin’s Snake Eagles, hundreds of Lesser Kestrels, the shy Ahanta Francolin, a pretty Quail-plover, Allen’s Gallinule, the elusive Arabian Bustard, Savile’s Bustard, sublime Bronze-winged, Cream-coloured and Temminck’s Coursers, cryptic Four-banded Sandgrouse, Adamawa Turtle Dove, Brown-necked Parrot, Standard-winged and Long-tailed Nightjars, beautiful Blue-bellied Rollers, Western Red-billed Hornbill, Bearded Barbet, Fine-spotted and diminutive Little Grey Woodpeckers, Fanti Saw-wing, West African and Pied-winged Swallows, Grey-headed Bristlebill, White-crowned Robin Chat, African Scrub Robin, White-fronted Black Chat, Rufous Cisticola, River Prinia, the delightful Cricket Warbler, Iberian Chiffchaff, the wonderful Oriole Warbler, Fulvous Babbler, both Yellow and Sennar Penduline Tits, exotic Pygmy Sunbirds and Yellow-crowned Gonoleks, Chestnut-bellied Starling, thousands of Sudan Golden Sparrows, Western Bluebill, Lavender Waxbill, Black-faced Quailfinch, both Sahel (in breeding plumage) and Exclamatory Paradise Whydahs and White-rumped Seedeater. To top it all, the sights, sounds (and smells!) of the avian spectacle of the Djoudj with its huge numbers of Greater and Lesser Flamingos, whirling flocks of wildfowl, White-breasted Cormorants and breeding Great White Pelicans were absolutely marvellous and unforgettable.
